The Oprah book club has made a number of contemporary authors wealthy, and brought millions of people to quality literature since its inception in 1996. Oprah selects books that have emotional appeal, literary value, and solid content. The Oprah book club has selected some magnificent books, but unfortunately, in 2005, selected A Million Little Pieces, which turned out to be a mistake.

A Million Little Pieces was chosen by the Oprah book club, and it was a remarkable book. Unfortunately, the truth got stretched in this book, and the backlash was severe for its author. He fabricated some of the events that took place during his recovery from alcoholism, and this aired after his selection as a Oprah book club read. Oprah had him back on her show after it became apparent that some of the material was fictional; overall, the author, James Frey, did a good job defending why he exaggerated some of the material in the book, but the public backlash lasted long after this became public knowledge.

Everyone I knew who read the book loved it, and granted him some literary license for his supposed transgressions. It still is a great read, and the writing style is quite interesting.
