oprah book club, Love in the Time of CholeraOne of the novels in the Oprah book club list is Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. I read this novel a couple of months ago. I can understand why it made the Oprah Book club list. According to the critics, this novel takes an entertaining look at the ageing process and death. It derides accepted perceptions of love and is told in a way that merges folk law with every day gossip. Therefore, Love in the Time of Cholera certainly seems to have a great deal to recommend it, which probably is why it made the Oprah book club list.
However, of all the Oprah book club novels I have read, Love in the Time of Cholera was the least enjoyable. In all honesty, I thought the book was boring and slow. I tried to like the novel because the positive reviews lead me to believe I should enjoy it, but reading it was more of a chore than a pleasure. Love In the Time of Cholera is a long winded description of a love triangle. It depicts the lovesickness of the protagonist, Florentino Ariza, who waits patiently for Fermina Daza, the woman of his dreams. In my view, the novel is schmaltzy, rambling and overly sentimental. I wasted my time reading it.
